Yoon-soo Cho

studied Korea-Japan relations at Tohoku University in Japan. Her doctoral dissertation, titled “International Politics of the South Korea-Japan Fisheries Negotiations,” analyzed the fisheries negotiations between South Korea and Japan during the normalization of their diplomatic relations in 1965. Currently, Cho is conducting research at the Northeast Asian History Foundation, focusing on Korea-Japan relations within the context of Japanese diplomacy and historical issues.

재단에서는 그동안 역사인식의 차이를 좁히기 위해 동아시아 역사에 대한 연구 및 국제 학술교류를 꾸준히 진행해 왔다. 그 결과는 다양한 시리즈의 역사관련 단행본으로 간행되어 많은 사람들의 공감을 얻었다. 다만 대부분 한국어 간행물이라는 점은 국경을 넘어 세계시민과 공유하고 소통하는 데 한계가 있었고, 이에 그 동안의 연구 성과를 국제사회에 알리고, 역사인식 차이를 해소할 수 있는 소통의 장을 마련하기 위해 History & Culture Series를 기획하였다. 이 시리즈는 동아시아 역사 및 영토·해양 문제 등 학계 또는 국가 사이에 쟁점이 되고 있는 문제를 이해하는 데 도움이 될 수 있는 주제들로 구성될 것이다. 재단에서 발행하는 이 시리즈가 동아시아 지역에서 발생하고 있는 역사 갈등을 정확히 이해하고, 역사인식의 차이를 줄여 나가는 데 크게 기여할 수 있게 되기를 기대한다.

이 책은 재단 교양총서 시리즈 《일본군‘위안부’》(2019, 동북아역사재단)를 영문으로 번역한 것이다. 일본군‘위안부’ 피해자들의 청춘은 일본군에 의해 철저하게 망가졌다. 그날들을 생각하면 화가 나고 울분을 참을 수 없어 기억에서 지우고 가슴에서 지우려고 애썼지만 그 상처는 없어지지 않았다. 일본군‘위안부’ 문제는 한일 간의 해묵은 과거가 아니라 현재 그리고 미래의 여성 인권에 관한 문제다. ‘평화의 소녀상’에는 빈 의자가 있다. 이 의자는 세상을 떠났거나 세상에 드러나지 않은 모든 피해자들을 위한 자리다. 이와 동시에 일본군‘위안부’와 같은 비극이 다시는 일어나지 않도록 노력하는 모든 이들을 위한 자리이기도 하다. 이 책이 그 빈자리를 채우고, 모든 피해자들의 마음에 꽃을 피우는 데 조금이나마 도움이 되었으면 한다.
