Manchria played a central role in the changing international relations of Northeast Asia during the early 17th century. Since the start of modern period, the region had to experience being occupied by imperial forces including Russia and Japan, followed by the rule of military factions. All this has contributed to Manchuria developing a peculiar historical character still remaining. This book was intended to look at the influence that 'migration and development' has had in the change and development process of Manchuria.
For this purpose, a number of narrowed topics had been established in relation to people's migration to Manchuria from Korea, China and Japan including: Changes in Qing Dynasty's Policies toward the Northeast from 'Prohibition of Chinese people's migration to Manchuria' to 'Strengthening the border defence through migration of people'; Japanese advancement into the Northeast after Russo-Japanese War which prompted the rising of tension in Manchuria; The background of increasing number of Korean migrants into Manchuria since the end of Joseon Dynasty; Japanese migration into Manchuria around the time when Manchu State was established. In these topics, this book examines the political and social backgrounds reflected in the people's migration to Manchuria during the modern period of history, and also looks at the changes and phenomena that people's migration brought to Manchuria.
Until now, studies of Manchuria by Korean scholars have been at such a high level as achieved by Japanese and European scholars. A shortfall in our studies is that such studies are related to certain subjects only and they have not dealt with various narrowed subjects in depth as most research subjects covered too wide geographic areas. They fail to give the holistic character.
In this sense, this book - where five researchers from different areas have analyzed various aspects of a particular region called 'Manchuria' with a topic of 'Migration and Development' - is expected to prompt more diverse researches on the region.
