This is a translation of a book written by Professor Boris D. Park which had brought responses on studies of international relations in East Asia since its first publication in 1979 with the same title. However, there were a lot of obstacles for the achievements of this book to be accepted in the Korean society at the time of publication because of the cold war atmosphere surrounding Korean peninsula and East Asia. Nevertheless, the international relations in East Asia and the Korea-Russia relations in particular from the author's Russian perspective are still valid and very important to those researchers at home and abroad who study international relations in East Asia. In line with this, Northeast Asian History Foundation has translated and introduces the revised edition of 2004 to Korean readers in memory of the 20th anniversary of Korea-Russia amity.
This book describes the general history of Korea-Russia relations from the 13th century until 1910 when Korea was annexed by Japan. It is worthy of note that the author freed himself from not only the limited geographic boundary of the Korean peninsula but also the Europe-centered perspective, and recomposed the history of Korea-Russia relations through elaborate comparison. It is the author's position well presented in this book that the important traditions of the Korea-Russia relations from the mid-19th century to the early 20th century should be protected well and be developed further.
