This book has been designed to critically review recent Chinese researches on the history of Balhae’s international relations, analyse China’s frames for understanding Balhae’s history and develope logic for our response actions. It is also in line with the ultimate goal of studying Balhae's history to review and criticize Chinese researches because things like international relations play the central part in judging where Balhae belongs. In this sense, this book can become a model for examining the fundamental thoughts of China on Balhae's history and it further gives knowledge about how South and North Koreas and surrounding countries understand Balhae's history. In particular, this book will be helpful to understand East Asian countries during 7 to 10th centuries from our own point of view, because during that period the East Asian history including Balhae's involved many nations and states that were closely linked to one another. With the diverse and complex nature of the studies of Balhae's history, this book is expected to become a stepping stone for sharing the knowledge of Balhae's history among researchers and areas and for further developing the studies to a higher level.
